This is a space created by Richard Ray Whitman to represent his childhood home. The wall paper consisted of black tar paper which was inexpensive and helped insulate the cottage from the winter elements. The red cylindrical item on the rope symbolizes the swing where Richard swung above the bed when he was a baby. When he cried, a member of the family would give the swing a little push. The man in the hat is Whitman. This photo was taken when Whitman was explaining this piece during an art show.
